Bill Spencer

Bill Spencer is known for a variety of athletic exploits. He won and owned records in both the junior and senior Mt. Marathon races for many years. He was a member of the 1988 Olympic cross-country ski team and a former member of the U.S. Orienteering Team, and he coached the UAA Nordic team for 10 years.

A civil engineer, Bill is also an accomplished trail builder and designer. Jim Galanes and Bill designed the Spencer Loop. Considered Anchorage’s most challenging and scenic cross-country trail, it winds up Campbell Creek Gorge and the hillside north of the Hilltop Alpine Ski Area. Bill has also designed the Lekisch Trail at Kincaid, the Lookout Mountain Trails in Homer, and the XY Lake Loop in Talkeetna. He helped to establish the Eagle Glacier Ski Camp in the early 1980s as a way for elite level skiers to train on snow in the summer.
