Ann MacInnis Mize (1947-2023)

Ann Mize was cofounder with Sally Burkholder of the Alaska Ski for Women, the largest women-only cross-country ski event in North America. During her career teaching at Dimond High School she taught physical education and coached cross-country skiing, cross-country running, and tennis. She was named Secondary School Physical Education Teacher of the year for the State of Alaska by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education in recognition of her outstanding teaching performance and her ability to motivate youth to participate in a lifetime of physical activity. She competed successfully in multiple National and World Masters Nordic competitions garnering top finishes in her age group. After retirement she helped coach the women’s masters program with the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center. The cut-off on the Besh Lighted Loop at Hillside was named “Ann’s Alley” in her honor.
