Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined

Every kid dreams about flying through the air.  The NSAA Ski Jumping program makes those dreams come true.  Our certified coaches teach skiers how to execute jumps safely while enjoying the thrill and exhilaration of the flight.

The facility has four jumps for all abilities: 10 meter, 20 meter, 40 meter, and the big daddy 65-meter. Recent upgrades to the Karl Eid Jumping Complex now allow Alaska’s ski jumpers to train and compete year-round.

In the summer, NSAA jumps use a combination of water, steel tracks and a special plastic grass surface to simulate slippery snow and allow for year-round ski jumping.

In the winter, our newly installed snow making system helps extend the jumping season.

NSAA offers programs for young skiers ages 5 and up. Check out our programs below!

Program

Description

Special jumping

Our special jumping programs are geared towards athletes that want to specialize in ski jumping. Athletes will work on and off the ski jumping hill to develop all the skills to be the best possible ski jumper they can be. Athletes that are enrolled in special jumping, but do their nordic training through other programs can still enter in our nordic combined competitions. Skiers should be able to ski down Hilltop Ski Area from the top of the lift without help before enrolling in one of our programs.

Nordic combined

Our nordic combined program is for athletes that want to ski jump and also cross country ski. Athletes will do all of the ski jumping training, but will also spend time building endurance through cross country skiing, running, and biking.

Nordic combined groups need a minimum of 3 athletes in or to run the program. If this threshold is not met we will issue you a refund.

Cubs – Ages 5 – 7 (DOB 2018-2016)

Cubs ski jumping is a very light introduction to the sport. This program starts in mid January and runs until the beginning of March. All skiers will use downhill ski gear, which must be provided by the families. Skiers will start on the landing hill and progress to the smallest jump, the 10 meter. Skiers should be able to ski down Hilltop Ski Area without help from parents or instructors.

U10 – Ages 6 – 9 (DOB 2014-2017)

U10 ski jumping and nordic combined is focused on having fun and developing fundamental skiing skills. Skiers will start out on the landing hill with their alpine ski gear. After mastering the landing hill skiers will move on to our smallest ski jump. Here skiers will continue to work on fundamental skiing skills. If their abilities progress enough, they will transfer over to ski jumping gear. Primary focus is having fun, developing ski skills, and learning about ski jumping/nordic combined. Skiers are highly encouraged to participate in other sports outside of ski jumping and nordic combined. Competitions should be viewed as a fun experience to gain competition skills.

U12 – Ages 10 – 11 (DOB 2012-2013)

U12 is very similar to U10 with added concentration on developing higher level ski jumping skills. Primary focus is having fun, developing ski skills, and learning about ski jumping/nordic combined. Skiers are highly encouraged to participate in other sports outside of ski jumping and nordic combined. Competitions should be viewed as a fun experience to gain competition skills.

U14 – Ages 12 -13 (DOB 2010-2011)

U14 ski jumping and nordic combined is designed for intermediate to advanced skiers. The focus of this program is to improve upon already developed ski jumping skills. Skiers will learn about structured training programs through a fun environment. Skiers will jump on the 20, 40, and 65-meter ski jumps. This program will develop athletes on and off the hill focusing on dryland training and technique training on the ski jump. Skiers are highly encouraged to attend local competitions and consider traveling outside of Alaska for Regional competitions. Skiers progress will be tracked through an introduction to training logs. Skiers are still encouraged to participate in other sports.

U16-U20 – Ages 14 – 19 (DOB 2004-2009)

U16-U20 ski jumping and nordic combined is designed for advanced skiers. Training plans will be made to fully develop and fine tune ski jumping and cross-country skills. There will be a strong emphasis on physical development off the ski jump. Skiers will track their training through training logs which will be reviewed by the coaching staff. Most training will be done on the 65-meter ski jump. Travel outside of Alaska training camps, and competitions is highly encouraged.

Ski Jumping coaches are few and far between. That’s why we’re lucky to have two USSA Certified coaches.

Coach Zak Hammill

Zak Hammill has been with NSAA’s Ski Jumping program for 6 years. Zak came to us from Ishpeming, Michigan, where he was the head ski jump coach. He was also a Central Division coach. Zak started ski jumping in Iron Mountain, Michigan, and moved on to train and compete at the highest levels in the USA and Europe. Zak received his degree from the Outdoor Studies program at Alaska Pacific University.

Coach Natasha Hammill

Natasha Hammill is NSAA’s small hill ski jumping coach. She has been coaching for NSAA for 5 years. Natasha joined us from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where she was a part of a ski jumping dynasty. Her three siblings, Nick, Nathan and Natalia, all ski jumped at various levels. Natasha began jumping when she was 5 years old. She earned her degree in Sustainability Studies from Alaska Pacific University.

Parent Testimonials

“During our first ski jumping practice, we quickly noticed that this program is structured with elements that are good for all kids: safety, confidence, strength, balance, community, and goal setting. I would highly recommend the nordic jumping program to any family looking for an enriching, safe, and fun new sport. The coaches are great at encouraging jumpers to lead their goal-setting based on their own level of comfort. There is no pressure to push beyond a jumper’s skill set from jumpers or coaches. In fact, jumpers and coaches are supportive and celebrate one another as their goals are met.  For the past 11 years, I’ve driven past the nordic ski jumps and thought, “My child will never do that, no matter what”. But I pushed through that and signed my kids up for the shoulder season, just for the exposure to a new sport. I am so impressed with the program, the coaches, and the jumping community. Both of my kids have learned invaluable lessons about themselves, overcoming challenges, and supporting their community in just a few short weeks. These lessons will follow them to other sports, music, studies, etc. whether they become jumpers for life or not. I highly recommend this program to anyone and everyone!”

Ayme Johnson

“The Alaska ski jumping program has changed our daughter’s life; igniting a passion that has lasted almost ten years and is still going strong. She has learned to challenge herself and her fears and has gained resilience, determination, and perseverance. This program has absolutely amazing volunteers, showcasing the value of community and teamwork in unique and powerful ways for all of the kids involved.”

Jennifer Wingard

The ski jumping community is something that I love being a part of. It has made me more
courageous. Standing at the top of the 65-meter jump, remembering everything my coach said, I have
to take a deep breath and let go of the bar. It’s given me the best friendships of my life. We get
to work and play together. Ultimately, I want to make my community as strong as it has made me.

Cody Flowers - Age 16 - Current Ski Jumper

Our two boys joined Team AK ski jumping as 8 and 10 year olds in 2016.  This program and the ski jumping / nordic combined community is the best group of winter sport families and kids I’ve experienced, and given the advent of plastic on the landing hills, its a sport the kids can be engaged in year round.  Our boys have made great friends here, around the country and around the world.  The ski jumping / nordic combined community in the US is a very welcoming and all around fun group!  We have enjoyed our many trips to competitions in other parts of the country, and count many friends made in other ski jumping locales in the lower 48.  Our kids have had terrific opportunities to travel to places like Slovenia, Austria, and Germany, and are currently both training in Norway.  The families in our Team AK club enjoy getting together for potlucks on occasion at the ski jumps, or pizza after pre-season work parties to prep the hills for winter and summer jumping.  The kids really engage in the club, not just for practice and comps, but also with the work parties, and they are so supportive of each other as developing athletes.  The coaching duo of Zak and Natasha are two of the best coaches you will find in this sport, and they are super dedicated to making sure the kids have a good experience with the program.  Can’t say enough good things about this program, really.  It has changed the course of our lives and enriched them with many friendships.
