Alaska Ski for Women – Register the Whole Family This Year

January 14, 2021/in News

Registration is open for the 2021 Alaska Ski for Women. The 4k course at Kincaid will be decorated starting Sunday, February 7th, with participants invited to ski any time over a five-day period. This fun event supports Alaska non-profits working to end the cycle of domestic violence in our community. The race committee is working hard to plan an event that is fun, safe and follows all public safety guidelines.

Bring the Entire Household

Special for the 25th Anniversary, we are inviting the whole family to participate. While Ski for Women is traditionally a women-only event, we recognize this year it is safer for members of the same household to ski together. This year we are opening registration to everyone – including men!

Distance Challenge

This year we will have an optional individual distance challenge via Challenge Hound, where participants can track how far they ski over the five-day event and compete for the longest distance. An invitation to join the challenge will be shared with all registrants in the week prior to the event.

How to Register:

There are 3 registration options:

  1. NSAA Member:
    1. Login into the NSAA Member Portal.
    2. Select ‘Current Events’ in the dropdown menu on the top right and search for Alaska Ski for Women.
    3. Proceed with the Registration!
  2. Not a Member Yet?
    1. Become a 2020-21 NSAA Member.
    2. Use your Confirmation Email to proceed and login to our Member Portal. (If you don’t receive this immediately, please call the NSAA Office).

    4. Proceed with the Registration!
  3. Not an NSAA Member:
    1. That’s okay! Click Here to Register!

Thank you for your patience! If you have any questions, give our office a call at (907)276-7609.

Snowmaking Update for December

December 16, 2020/in News, Trails

Snowmaking began on Nov. 2, the earliest date in the seven years that NSAA has operated the snowmaking system. As of Dec. 15, 2.9 million gallons of water have been used to place snow on various trails. These include the green and yellow trails, the turquoise trails on Gong Hill, and about two-thirds of the stadium. Currently the operations crew is working on finishing the stadium and the purple trail.

The snowmaking operation overall this winter has been good thus far. We’ve been quite pleased with the new version of nozzles and nucleators we installed on 5 lances. They create twice as much snow as the older versions in the same amount of time so the trails are covered faster. Unfortunately, there have been issues with about half of the 16 lances. As the snowmaking system ages, a number of parts in the lances have started to fail and have had to be replaced. Most likely, next summer the operations staff will need to do a thorough inspection of the entire lance system and replace worn parts such as hoses, valves, and valve motors.

Public Testimony Opportunity: Airport Construction Project

December 1, 2020/in News

Dear NSAA Members,

The Nordic Skiing Association has recently learned about a potential large construction project at the Anchorage International Airport.  The NSAA Board of Directors endeavors to keep our membership informed of any issues that may affect outdoor recreation generally, and Nordic skiing specifically, in our community.

The project to develop air cargo facilities would be located on the north side of Raspberry Road directly across from Serenity Circle, Serenity Drive, Lowell Circle and Tanaina Drive and east of the Little Campbell Lake access road in Kincaid Park. This three-year construction project would include development of cargo jet fueling stations, aircraft maintenance facilities and hangars.

A land lease application has been submitted to the airport and as such, the public may comment on the proposed lease. Comments must be received on or before 5:00PM on December 9, 2020.

Comments can be submitted to:

Attn: Teresa Ressler, Land Manager
Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport PO Box 196960
Anchorage, AK 99519-6960

teresa.ressler@alaska.gov

Due to the project’s proximity to Kincaid Park, the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage felt that members may be interested in this project and may want to submit comments.

Concerns that have been expressed to NSAA include a desire for an extension to the comment period, more study on the impact to the local environment (traffic, noise, smell, etc.) and more robust outreach to stakeholders and the local community. Currently, public notices were only posted at the North and South terminals between the dates of November 10th and November 30th.

The Sand Lake Community Council is also hosting a Special Meeting about this project on Monday, December 7th at 6pm. Visit their facebook page for more information: https://www.facebook.com/SandLakeCommunityCouncil/
